First, it is perfectly accurate to call something a genocide when politicians are openly saying at rallies “transgenderism must be eliminated”. That is calling for genocide!!
Second, there is more than one way to commit genocide; it doesn’t just mean “forcing them to wear symbols, rounding them up and murdering them in camps”. Genocide includes inflicting great harm to a group of people with the intent of erasing them from existence. Many different groups of people have had genocide committed against them, including the indigenous people of the Americas.
Denying trans people the right to transition, making it illegal to talk about trans people in school, forcibly detransitioning trans people, forcing them to live in the closet, forcing them to be sterilized in order to transition, labeling “living with a trans person” as child abuse so you can take away their children, and making it illegal to openly identify as trans, are all acts of genocide. They are all designed to destroy trans people.

“Genocide” was coined to describe the Shoah, but—for once—the statement “not only Jews were affected” applies here.
You know who suffered more deaths per capita than we did? The Rromani. Less than one percent of all Rromani living in Axis-controlled areas survived the Holocaust. It’s hardly disrespectful to Jews to call that a genocide.
You know who we retroactively apply the label to? The Armenians. Look up the 1900 Armenian genocide.
A few other things that accurately get described as genocide: Pol Pot’s Cambodian genocide, the Trail of Tears as an instrument of genocide, the Khmer Rouge on a smaller scale have committed genocide. Residential schools? Instruments of genocide.
When a group of people is deliberately singled out for stochastic terror and destruction because they are some kind of minority, THAT IS GENOCIDE. The reason it took so long for us to have a word for it is because groups being large-scale targeted for a specific (usually but not always) ethnic reason usually just…disappeared. Newsreel footage of the liberation at Auschwitz is what changed that. We put a face to genocide in a way that hadn’t happened before, but we weren’t the first. (Nor was this the first genocide against Jews, but we tend to call earlier ones pogroms.)
And as a side note: FUCK you, TERFs, for trying to claim my people’s tragedy as a way to put down trans people. Because you know one of the first groups targeted in the early days of the Shoah? TRANS WOMEN. Because the push for trans rights and recognition was being led by Max Hirschfeld, a gay Jewish man. And furthermore, yes, we can say definitively that they were trans, BECAUSE HE’S THE ONE WHO COINED THE WORD “TRANSSEXUAL.”
And it was women just like you who were trying to pop out beautiful blonde Aryan babies for the glory of Hitler while my people burned. And who, today, deride the ethnic features of cis Jewish women as being “manly” and who “out” cis Jewish women and our cis Muslim sisters as “men” based on common MENA phenotypes that don’t match your racist slender-white-Eurocentric femininity. You participated in genocide then and you’re doing it now.

so some folks may not be aware of the origins of the pink triangle (and also the black triangle that was used)?
the pink triangle was used to identify gay & bi men and trans womenin the camps. the black triangle was used for disabled people, Rromani, lesbians, trans men, homeless people, sex workers, and other people deemed “asocial” by the regime. and since being out wasn’t decriminalized when the camps were liberated, many people marked out with these triangles were re-incarcerated by the state once they were freed as they were still considered to have committed a crime under the law. if a person happened to be jewish on top of being any of these, they also had to wear the yellow triangle
please read about Paragraph 175, the sodomy provision which already existed in the german penal code since 1871, but under the nazi regime, raised gay sex/sodomy to be considered a felony and expanded the law to broadly include “lewd acts” and criminalize more people/more types of behavior. by 1937 8,000+ people a year were being convicted under Paragraph 175. the law remained in force in various forms until 1994 when it was finally repealed. (for timescale context… i am 30 years old and was born in 1992)
prior to this, the weimar republic was a vibrant place where diversity was flourishing. tl;dr… trans genocide is real, obviously
